The Navagraha System
Vedic astrology uses nine planets (Navagraha) — but they're not all physical bodies. The system includes the two lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu), which are mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic.
The Navagraha are: Luminaries: Sun (Surya) and Moon (Chandra) Inner Planets: Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Venus (Shukra), Jupiter (Guru) Outer Planet: Saturn (Shani) Lunar Nodes: Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node)
Each planet represents specific energies, drives, and life areas. In Vedic astrology, planets are not just celestial bodies — they are cosmic intelligences (Devatas) that govern different aspects of manifestation.
Benefics and Malefics
Planets are classified as natural benefics or malefics based on their inherent nature:
Natural Benefics: Jupiter (the greater benefic), Venus (the lesser benefic), Moon (when bright/waxing), Mercury (when not conjunct malefics) Natural Malefics: Saturn (the greater malefic), Mars (the lesser malefic), Sun (mild malefic), Rahu, Ketu
However, this natural classification is modified by: - Functional nature: Based on which houses the planet rules from your Ascendant - Condition: Exalted, debilitated, combust, retrograde, or in own sign - Associations: Conjunctions and aspects from other planets
A naturally benefic planet that rules difficult houses can become a functional malefic. Conversely, a naturally malefic planet like Saturn can become a powerful yoga karaka (auspicious planet) for certain Ascendants. This nuanced understanding is what makes Vedic astrology so precise.
Planet Significations (Karakatva)
Each planet signifies (karaka) specific people, things, and experiences in life:
Sun (Surya): Soul, father, authority, government, vitality, ego, leadership Moon (Chandra): Mind, emotions, mother, public, memory, receptivity, intuition Mars (Mangal): Courage, energy, siblings, property, aggression, technical skill, surgery Mercury (Budh): Intellect, speech, communication, business, mathematics, analysis, youth Jupiter (Guru): Wisdom, expansion, children, wealth, spirituality, teaching, husband in a woman's chart Venus (Shukra): Love, beauty, relationships, luxury, creativity, arts, wife in a man's chart Saturn (Shani): Discipline, karma, delays, hard work, longevity, servants, sorrow, structure Rahu: Desires, obsession, foreign influences, unconventional paths, amplification, materialism Ketu: Liberation, detachment, spirituality, past-life wisdom, isolation, moksha
When a planet is strong and well-placed, its positive significations flourish. When weak or afflicted, the negative expressions emerge. For example, a strong Jupiter brings wisdom and abundance, while an afflicted Jupiter can bring financial losses and poor judgment.
Planetary Strength and Dignity
A planet's expression is modified by its dignity — the sign it occupies:
Exaltation (Uccha): Maximum strength — the planet expresses its best qualities powerfully Moolatrikona: Very strong — the planet's own territory with some flexibility Own Sign (Swakshetra): Strong — the planet is comfortable and effective Friendly Sign: Moderate strength — the planet functions reasonably well Neutral Sign: Average — the planet's expression is mixed Enemy Sign: Weak — the planet struggles to express positively Debilitation (Neecha): Minimum strength — the planet's positive significations are suppressed
The exaltation and debilitation points are specific degrees within signs: - Sun exalted in Aries 10°, debilitated in Libra 10° - Moon exalted in Taurus 3°, debilitated in Scorpio 3° - Mars exalted in Capricorn 28°, debilitated in Cancer 28° - Mercury exalted in Virgo 15°, debilitated in Pisces 15° - Jupiter exalted in Cancer 5°, debilitated in Capricorn 5° - Venus exalted in Pisces 27°, debilitated in Virgo 27° - Saturn exalted in Libra 20°, debilitated in Aries 20°
Understanding planetary dignity is essential for reading a chart accurately. A debilitated planet doesn't mean disaster — it means the planet's energy needs conscious cultivation and may express unconventionally.
