What Is a Vedic Birth Chart?
A Vedic birth chart, also called a Kundali or Janam Kundali, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It shows where each of the nine planets (Navagraha) was positioned among the twelve zodiac signs and houses.
Unlike Western astrology, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — based on actual star positions rather than the seasons. This means your Vedic Sun sign is typically one sign earlier than your Western Sun sign.
The birth chart is the foundation of all Vedic astrology analysis. Every prediction, compatibility assessment, and life reading begins with understanding this fundamental map.
The Twelve Houses (Bhavas)
The birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each representing a different area of life. In Vedic astrology, the Whole Sign house system is used — each house equals one complete zodiac sign.

A planet in its own sign, exaltation sign, or friendly sign is stronger. A planet in its debilitation or enemy sign is weaker.
House placement
Planets in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) gain directional strength (dig bala). Planets in trinal houses (1st, 5th, 9th) are naturally auspicious.
Combustion
When a planet is too close to the Sun, it becomes combust and loses strength.
Retrograde
Retrograde planets (appearing to move backward) have a different quality of influence — they often relate to past-life karma.
Navamsa strength
If a planet is strong in both the birth chart (D1) and Navamsa (D9), it is considered truly powerful (vargottama).

In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign is often considered more important than the Sun sign. It reveals your emotional nature, instincts, and inner self.
Step 3 — Assess the Ascendant Lord

The Ascendant Lord is your chart's "CEO." Where it sits and what it aspects reveals your life's main direction. Always analyze the Ascendant lord before any other planet.
Step 4 — Look at the House Lords

Step 5 — Identify Key Yogas
Yogas are specific planetary combinations that create significant effects. Look for Raja Yogas (power and success), Dhana Yogas (wealth), and any doshas (afflictions like Mangal Dosha).
Step 6 — Consider the Dasha Periods
The Vimshottari Dasha system tells you WHEN different planetary influences will activate. Your current Dasha period reveals which life themes are most active right now.

Reading planets in isolation
